Suwon Samsung’s coach Yeom Ki-hoon, who shed the ‘acting manager’ tag and became the official head coach, expressed his ambition to achieve promotion to the first division (K League 1) this year.

At the media day held at the Suwon Samsung Football Club clubhouse in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 11th, Coach Ki-hoon Yeom said, “I became the head coach sooner than planned, but my heart is heavy and I feel a sense of responsibility. He only thinks about promotion to the first division. “I risked everything in my soccer career,” he said.

Suwon, a prestigious club representing the K-League, finished in last place in K-League 1 after experiencing internal troubles, including changing coaches twice last year.

Yeom Ki-hoon, acting manager of Suwon Samsung, turns around and leaves the ground after giving a tearful apology in front of supporters after the team’s relegation to the second division was confirmed.

Coach Yeom Gi-hoon performed well with 3 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses in the last 7 games as acting manager, but was unable to prevent the team from being relegated to the second division for the first time since its founding. In particular, if they had won the final match against Gangwon FC, they could have had a chance to participate in the promotion playoffs, but they ended up drawing 0-0 due to passive management of the game.

Suwon, which is seeking promotion to the first division, appointed Manager Yeom as its official manager and gave it a boost. Regarding the background of the appointment of Coach Yeom, Suwon explained, “We expect that he will contribute to resolving the immediate problem and normalizing the team.”

Coach Yeom, who played in the Suwon uniform from 2010 to last year, understands the Suwon team better than anyone else. However, some point out that he lacks leadership experience. For this reason, Suwon fans expressed dissatisfaction and concern when the ‘unproven’ coach Yeom took the helm.

Coach Yeom said, “The Suwon head coach position is a dangerous position (for a novice head coach), and I don’t know what the future of my soccer career will be (depending on my performance after taking office). “His wife was also strongly against it,” he said. “But I saw the change while leading the team as acting manager last year, and I felt that I could do something with these players.” Also, I didn’t want to leave the team I loved called Suwon. “I accepted the position as director after only seeing those aspects,” he said.

At the same time, Director Yeom expressed confidence that he would respond to criticism directed at him with results. He said, “I know very well that you have a lot of concerns about coach Yeom Ki-hoon. “It broke my heart to see the cold reaction of the fans who supported me,” he said. “While I have been a player for a long time, my life as a coach is very short. It is true that he has no experience. But (as a director) it’s not like I don’t know anything. He is ready to work harder than anyone else. “If anything goes wrong, he will take responsibility himself,” he pledged.

He continued, “I haven’t shown anything so far, but I will prove it in the future. “I’m confident, so please evaluate me after the season is over,” he added.

Coach Yeom, who took the helm, was the first to emphasize discipline to the players. He said, “When I was a player, I was smiley and gentle, but now that I am a coach, I will show a different side. “I consider discipline very important and will strictly manage it,” he said. “The most important thing as a professional athlete is to stick to the basics. Only by following small rules can we build trust in each other and become one team. “We will never hire a player who does not follow the rules in the team,” he said.

For the 2023 season, up to three teams in K League 2 were given the opportunity to be promoted to K League 1. The first-place team is automatically promoted to the first division, and the second-place team and the team that wins the playoffs will play a promotion playoff against the 11th and 10th-place teams in the first division, respectively.

At first glance, it appears that promotion can be achieved easily, but the road to the first division is thorny. In K-League 2, the difference in power between teams was not large, so battles took place every year. Moreover, even if they had a chance at the promotion playoffs, it would have been difficult to get past the K League 1 team. There was only one team that succeeded in being promoted to the first division in the 2023 season, Gimcheon Sangmu, which was automatically promoted.

In response, Coach Yeom said, “We will play dynamic soccer using the midfield this season,” and added, “They call the second division a war, but the first division was also a battlefield. “I am confident (of being promoted to the first division) because we have worked hard so far,” he said. 19가이드03
