Prime Minister Sbu Ndebele officially opened the $727 million luxury North Coast venue last night, throwing his first dice on the main floor of the glamorous Shivaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom.

Along with many dignitaries, including MEC for Arts, Culture, and Tourism Narend Singh, Ndebelle congratulated Afrisun on his seven-year gamble coming to fruition.

The company, which consists of majority shareholders Sun International, Moreland, Dolcoast and a number of black empowerment partners, was last approved for the state’s casino license in August 2000.

The palatial Afro-Fantasy venue, just north of Umranga, is not only expected to inject billions of dollars into the local economy, but it has already created jobs. According to Tristan Katz, division president of Sun International, Shivaya has already created 1300 permanent jobs and around 5,000 temporary and 10,000 indirect jobs during the construction period.

During its development, Afrisun built an interchange on the N2 highway to ensure safe and efficient access to the facility, which provides parking for 2200 vehicles. The highway is also expected to affect future developments across the Northern Corridor, which began to be known as the Sibaya node.

“This interchange symbolically opens up the area for development. It highlights the reality of the construction of King Shaka International Airport in La Mercy and suggests further growth in the area,” Katsuzhe explained.

One of the minority shareholders, Moreland, is already planning new developments on both sides of N2 near Shivaya.

As for the original casino bid, a temporary casino was established in Mount Edgecombe. Opened in February 2001, the hugely successful Sugar Mill Casino moved locks, stock, and barrels to Sibaya with 650 employees, smoothly transitioning it to what has been touted as one of the most technologically advanced gaming operations in the United States.

Last night’s preview of the gaming facility showed the innovative use of sophisticated smart card technology for Shivaya’s 900 slots and 37 gaming tables, which include roulette, blackjack, and poker and spread across three areas: the main floor, a dedicated smoking area, and an elegant, luxurious royal court. 릴게임
