Chelsea ‘targeting Kim Min-jae’s former teammate’, could sell 3 players in winter transfer window
Chelsea’s form in the English Premier League (EPL) is unbelievable. Mauricio Pochettino took over the reins after a successful stint at Tottenham Hotspur, but the Blues are at their worst. They’re not even close to fourth place in the UEFA Champions League, let alone fighting for the title. Rather, they are closer to the relegation zone. ‘Total disaster’ is the right word.
Even Pochettino’s job has been called into question. They’ve lost two straight league games and are down to 12th place. A whopping 18 points behind first-place Liverpool (37), the title is out of reach. They are also 14 points behind fourth-place Manchester City (33 points). They’re only five points ahead of 17th-place Everton (13 points), who were punished with a points deduction. A mid-table fall is more likely than a leap to the top.
In this atmosphere, there are predictions of a winter transfer window next January. With so many injuries, it’s not easy to rebound in the standings, so it makes sense to sell quickly and bring in new players. On the 15th, ESPN reported that “Chelsea will sell three players in the winter transfer window”.
The media outlet predicted that Chelsea would first sell striker Noni Madueke. Since joining Chelsea in January from Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, Madueke has made just two appearances for the Blues. He has completely lost the battle for a starting spot and has been linked with a move away. Along with Madueke, Trevor Chalobah and Ian Mattesen have also been mentioned as potential offload targets.
European media outlets have reported that Chelsea are preparing to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who played alongside Kim Min-jae in the Italian Serie A last season and led Napoli to the title. It has been argued that the club needs to bolster its offense by signing Osimhen. Osimhen has also given positive signals about joining Chelsea. He indirectly hinted at his interest in joining the Blues by mentioning his idol Didier Drogba’s performances.
Chelsea will play their 2023-2024 EPL Round 17 home game against Sheffield United on Sunday. The Blues will be looking to turn things around against a Sheffield side that is languishing at the bottom of the league with eight points. A win could see them climb as high as 10th. On the flip side, a loss could see them drop to 15th.
