Borgata in Atlantic City
The groundbreaking ceremony for the $1 billion Borgata Resort took place on Sept. 21, a move many believe will mark a turning point in Atlantic City’s next phase of growth. That evening, construction officially began on Borgata, Atlantic City’s first new property in more than a decade.
William S. Boyd, Chairman and CEO of Boyd Gaming Corporation, attended an event by MGM Mirage Chairman Terry Rani to mark the beginning of the development of a joint venture between the two companies. The executives were also accompanied by New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan and other prominent New Jersey and Atlantic City officials on the nearly 30-acre site.
When opened in 2003, The Borgata will be the first new resort in Atlantic City in 13 years and the largest hotel on the market. The 40-story development plan includes 2,010 rooms, approximately 120,000 square feet of gaming space, several specialty restaurants and unique boutiques, European-style spas and multiple entertainment venues.
The new four-lane Atlantic City-Brigantin connector, which is currently under construction, will connect the Atlantic City Highway to the Marina District to provide a central infrastructure for the development of the area. It is expected to be completed in the next few months and will provide access to The Borgataro as well as other casinos and businesses located in the area.
“This is an important milestone for Borgata, which represents a significant growth opportunity for Boyd Gaming and Atlantic City. Borgata will fit nearly 30 acres and the building will contain more than 4 million square feet. The property’s innovative design will create a fun and vibrant atmosphere,” said William S. Boyd.
