Kim Ha-Sung, a prominent Korean baseball evangelist and big league
Kim Ha-Sung, a prominent Korean baseball evangelist and big leaguer, aims to prevent negative influences from the younger generation.
Kim Ha-seong of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball emphasized the word “responsibility” the most. Before he was a professional athlete earning money, he confessed that he thought hard about his role in promoting Korean baseball to the United States and the world.
After a successful 2023 season, Kim returned home via Incheon International Airport on Nov. 11. He established himself as the spearhead of San Diego’s superstar-studded offense, batting first. He hit 17 home runs and stole a whopping 38 bases. The local fans were overwhelmingly supportive as he sprinted and threw himself into every play. 바카라사이트 Kim himself said, “I feel like the cheers are louder when I hear them.” He went from being an up-and-comer from South Korea to being recognized as a national baseball star.
But it wasn’t without its challenges. He signed a 4+1 year, $36 million contract with San Diego before the 2021 season. However, his first season didn’t live up to expectations, as he batted just 2-for-2 with eight home runs.
“Because of me, Korean players may not be able to reach the major leagues in the future. I’m afraid of that thought,” he said in an interview. “I went to the U.S. at a young age, but I didn’t do well in the first year, and since I didn’t get paid a lot of money, I was thinking, ‘Maybe juniors who dream of entering the major leagues in the future will be adversely affected,’ so I thought I had to do better,” Kim said. “I hope that many young players will have big goals. I want them to dream of the major leagues.”
He also emphasized his responsibility for winning the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. “I also won gold at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, and I think the players handled the pressure well. I am very grateful to the juniors for their good performance at the Asian Games, the next tournament after the World Baseball Classic in March. I have a duty to promote Korean baseball, but I think the juniors also played with that responsibility.”
As for next year’s season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which will be held in Korea for the first time ever, Kim said, “I hope a lot of juniors and amateur players will come and watch the game. It’s a chance for them to grow their dreams.” Kim connected the significance of the first major league game in Korea to the future development of Korean baseball.
