Pohang overtakes Ulsan…race for top spot on the line
Professional soccer’s K League 1 leaders, Ulsan Hyundai, were unable to secure a win in their third meeting with Daejeon Hana Citizens. A win over Daejeon would have made Ulsan the first K League 1 club to win against its former club this season, but the unusually strong Daejeon was not to be denied.
Ulsan drew 1-1 with Daejeon in a home match in the 30th round of the K League One 2023 at Munsus Football Stadium in Ulsan on Nov. 16. With the point, Ulsan closed the gap on second-place Pohang Steelers (56 points) to six points.
Daejeon took the lead in the first minute and 20 seconds of the match when Kim In-gyun received a through ball after Masa sprinted through the middle of the field and slotted a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Cho Soo-hyuk, who had come forward from the left side of the penalty area.
In the 29th minute of the first half, Ulsan striker In Ju-gyu converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. With the goal, In Ju-gyu (14 goals) moved past Daejeon’s Thiago to become the league’s all-time leading scorer.
Ulsan substituted Rubiksson, Lee Chung-yong, Kim Young-kwon, and Bako in the second half. In the 38th minute, Bako scored a volley from the right side of the penalty arc, but the goal was disallowed due to goalkeeper obstruction. After earning a penalty kick opportunity in stoppage time, Ulsan again sent out Lee In-gyu as the kicker, but this time he was stopped by Daejeon goalkeeper Lee Chang-geun.
Pohang extended its unbeaten run to nine matches (five wins and four draws) with a 2-0 win over Suwon FC at home thanks to a multi-goal performance from Zeca. Zeca opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he headed home Wandelsson’s cross from the left flank. He then added a second in the 44th minute with a right-footed strike after dribbling down the right flank from near the halfway line.
Jeonbuk Hyundai dropped their fifth match without a win (three draws and two losses) with a 1-3 loss to Gangwon FC. After taking a 1-0 lead five minutes into the match when 먹튀검증 Gustavo converted a penalty kick, Jeonbuk conceded three goals. With men’s national soccer coach Jürgen Klinsmann watching the game, Gangwon managed to escape the bottom of the table by beating Jeonbuk in heavy rain on the day.
Incheon United defeated Jeju United 2-1 thanks to a theater goal from Hernandez. Incheon moved up one spot to sixth place (43 points), the final spot in the top split “Final A” (leagues 1-6).
