Wolverhampton fall to 1-3 defeat at Liverpool after Hwang Hee-chan misses opener

Wolverhampton Wanderers couldn’t hold on to an early Hwang Hee-Chan lead and were upset by Liverpool.

Liverpool defeated Wolverhampton 3-1 in the fifth round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton, England, on Saturday.

Hwang Hee-chan opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Wolverhampton striker Netou made a bold run down the left flank, breaking through three defenders and delivering a grounded cross. Hwang, who was rushing toward the center from the right flank, placed a precise right foot on the ball. The ball found its way into an empty net, where goalkeeper Alisson Becker flailed but managed to get a hand to it after it crossed the line.

Wolverhampton had spent long periods of time matching Liverpool in terms of quality. The problem was finishing. While they weren’t far behind in shots (11 to 16), they had a bigger margin in shots on target (2 to 6). Worse, there was no one player who could capitalize on a string of chances. Wolverhampton’s most prolific player had just two shots.
