Women’s soccer MF Cho So-hyun and striker Choi Yuri join Birmingham City in the English second division
Veteran Korean women’s national soccer team midfielder Cho So-hyun (35) and striker Choi Yoo-ri (28) have joined Birmingham City of the English Women’s Second Division (Championship).
Birmingham City announced the signings of Cho So-hyun and Choi Yoo-ri on July 15 (KST).
The contracts are for one year with a one-year extension option for Cho and two years with a one-year option for Choi.
Cho is one of the most iconic players in South Korean women’s soccer with 148 caps for the senior national team, tied with Ji So-yeon (Suwon FC) for the most caps in history.
At the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia-New Zealand, which concluded last month, she scored the opening goal in the final group game against Germany, making her the only goal scorer of the tournament for South Korea, who were eliminated after finishing last in their group with a 1-1 draw and two points. It was his 26th international goal.
After playing for Suwon Facilities Management Corporation and Incheon Hyundai Steel in the WK League, he made his first overseas move in 2016 on loan to Kobe Ainak (Japan), before joining Norwegian side Avaldnes in 2018.
In 2019, she broke into the English Women’s Super League (WSL) in a West Ham shirt, and from 2021, she played for Tottenham.
Her contract with Spurs ended ahead of the World Cup, and she has been looking for a new team ever since, but she will continue her life in England.
Choi Yuri made his debut in the WK League in 2016 and has been playing for Hyundai Steel since the 2021 season.
In her first year with Hyundai, she led the team to the title and was named the MVP of the Championship Final, and scored 10 goals in the 2022 season.
For the national team, she scored nine goals in 54 A-match appearances, including at this year’s Women’s World Cup.
Birmingham City Womyn, who have signed two Korean players, won the Women’s FA Cup in the 2011-2012 season and were WSL runners-up in 2011 and 2012.
After being relegated to the bottom of the WSL in 2021-2022, they finished second in the championship in 2022-2023, but this season they have had a slow start with only one draw and two losses in three league games. 토토
