Seoul smiles at ‘new face’ performance…coach Kim Ki-dong “will be resilient”
FC Seoul coach Kim Ki-dong, whose team has won four consecutive games in the K League 1 for the first time in five years, said he expects the team to gain momentum from the performance of new faces.
“I thought today and the next game against Gangwon FC were ‘one year’s farming,’ and it’s important because if we can catch them, we can go up to fourth place,” Kim said at a press conference after the team’s K League 1 27th round home match against Jeju United at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday. ‘I think the players must have seen confidence and hope by getting three valuable points today,’ he said.
On the day, Seoul beat Jeju 1-0 to move into fifth place with 42 points.
The mood was especially buoyed by their fourth straight win in the league, their first in five years since 2019.
Seoul, who have been in the Final B for the past four years despite having as colorful a roster as any team in the league, seem to be back to being a ‘powerhouse’ under the leadership of ‘mastermind’ Kim Ki-dong.
Reflecting on the game, Kim said, “In the first half, we had a good tempo and played the kind of soccer we wanted to play, but in the second half, we played a disappointing amount of soccer. When you’re winning, the players are very protective, so the plays you want to make don’t come out well, but I think that’s the dilemma of coaches.”
“In the past, it would have been possible for Seoul to score first and concede a goal and draw, but now we have the strength to hold on even in difficult situations,” he said, ”and I think that strength will be very helpful for the rest of the journey.”
Seoul’s rise, which has been as hot as the summer heat, has been fueled in large part by new faces who joined the team through the recent transfer market.
Lucas scored the opening goal on his debut for Seoul, while Jordanian international defender Yazan, who joined the club last month, and goalkeeper Kang Hyun-moo, who joined earlier this month, were crucial in protecting the one-goal lead.
“When I first started in Seoul, I didn’t have the kind of squad I wanted, so I went through a tough situation, but in the summer I got the players I wanted, which gave me confidence,” said Kim Ki-dong.
“Today, Lucas scored the goal and Hyunmoo saved a goal that could have gone in at the end to get us the three points. With Yazan coming in, we kept a clean sheet and I think we have stability at the back,” he smiled, adding, ”I think the players are aware of the situation and hopefully that will give the team momentum.”
“We shouldn’t get carried away,” Kim said of the assessment that a top spot in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League (ACL) is within reach, but he cautiously looked higher, saying that a ‘winning mentality’ has taken hold in Seoul.
“I’ve always set goals like ‘most goals’ with the players at a certain point in time, and I think it’s time for that,” he said, adding, ”We’ll think about it.”
Meanwhile, Lucas, who made a strong impression in his first K League appearance, said, “I received a lot of hospitality and support from the first day I arrived. It’s an honor to play in front of such great fans,” he said, adding, ”I’m very happy to score a goal in my debut and help the team win.”
“I’m slowly getting used to Korean soccer. It’s fast and has a lot of transitions,” he said, adding, ”I’m determined to adapt more and show my strengths and play better than I am now.” 바카라사이트 추천
