‘Sluggish escape sign’ KIA Na Sung-bum “I’m thinking of asking Do-young to hit”

Kia Tigers captain Na Sung-beom, 34, has found a way out of his slump this season.

Na hit the game-winning two-run homer in the ninth inning against the LG Twins at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Saturday.

With the 3-2 victory, leader Kia improved to 66 wins, 46 losses and two ties, moving five games clear of second-place LG (60-50-2).

For Na Sung-beom, it set the stage for a late-season surge.

Na tore the muscle behind his right thigh (hamstring) in March of this year and was sidelined for over a month, and even after returning in late April, he hasn’t been able to get back to his old form.

In 82 games this season, he is batting .279 (87-for-312) with 16 home runs, 67 RBIs, and an OPS of .835.

Na has only hit in the double digits in 2013 (0.243) and 2021 (0.281), his debut seasons in the first team.

In a postgame interview, Na credited Kia manager Lee Bum-ho for helping him turn the pressure into responsibility.

“The coach said, ‘You seem to be under too much pressure. Your expression is dark,’ and he jokingly told me, ‘If you can’t hit, you’ll just lose, so relax,’” he recalled with a laugh.

“I felt a sense of responsibility, and I wanted to repay the coach for his faith in me, and I feel good that I repaid him today in an important game,” said Na.

“I was sensitive to the batting order at first, but I realized that if I hit well, I would move up at some point. These days, I’m just trying to be myself,” he said.

He doesn’t jump to the conclusion that he’s out of his slump.

“When things don’t go my way, I get impatient or my timing is off,” he said, adding, ”Baseball is a game where I know my shortcomings and still don’t do well. It’s a homework I have to keep working on.”

For that homework, he approaches his juniors and asks them for help.

He praised Kim Do-young, who became the youngest player to reach 30-30 the previous day, saying, “He’s 14 years older than me, but this year his hitting mechanics have improved to the point where I have to learn from him. I’m thinking of asking Do-young once after this season is over.” 메이저사이트
