Major Retreat: SuperBooks And Betfred Pull Out U.S. Online Sports Betting Markets

As the new soccer season approaches, the game is changing significantly for American online sports betting operators. Two notable companies in the industry, SuperBook and Betfred, have announced that they have significantly reduced their market presence.

Known for operating based in Nevada, SuperBook has declared that it is suspending its sports betting service outside of its home state. The decision affects businesses across eight states, including Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. The announcement was made in a tweet by SuperBook at 8:38 p.m. on Friday, shortly after the company stopped betting at 8 p.m. Images are currently displayed on their websites to announce the decision.

“We regret to inform you that SuperBook Sports will no longer accept bets or deposits from the states of AZ, CO, IA, MD, NJ, OH, TN & VA. Thank you for being a loyal customer of SuperBook Sports,” read a tweet from SuperBook Sports. However, no specific reason was provided for this sudden withdrawal.

The data showed that SuperBooks struggled to gain significant market share in those regions. For New Jersey, the best-performing of the eight states, SuperBooks had a revenue share of just 0.3% in June. Other states had much lower market penetration, with just 0.1% for Arizona and 0.01% for Virginia.

Operational restrictions imposed by the Wire Act, which restricts interstate sports betting activities, may have contributed to SuperBook’s challenge. The federal law likely prevented the company from taking advantage of SuperContest, a popular NFL betting product beyond its state lines.

Betfred, get out of Ohio

Meanwhile, Betfred also announced its exit from Ohio’s sports betting market, marking the second time it has left Maryland in June. The company forwarded the decision via email to Ohio customers. Like SuperBooks, Betfred is struggling to gain a significant foothold in Ohio’s highly competitive market, with online handle and taxable revenue share negligible at 0.08% and 0.003%, respectively, in May.

Despite the challenges, Betfred continues to operate in eight states, including Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, but only six of them offer mobile betting.

The withdrawal of SuperBooks and Betfreds is one of the overall trends observed in the U.S. sports betting industry this year. Other companies, including Betway, Saharavet and SI Sportsbook, have also reduced their operations or pulled out of the U.S. market altogether. It reflects the fierce competition and regulatory challenges facing sports betting operators in complex and diverse U.S. markets. 무료슬롯사이트

The shift comes at a time when the industry is attempting to capitalize on the growing interest in sports betting, fueled by the expansion of legal betting options and the popularity of major sports leagues. However, as the market evolves, only operators that can effectively attract and retain customers while navigating the regulatory environment are likely to thrive.
